RANGE: Caribbean Islands, Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Florida, off the coasts of Panama and Colombia

THREATS: Offshore oil drilling, hunting, habitat degradation, invasive predators in its nesting areas

POPULATION TREND: Once thought to be extinct, the species consists of an estimated 600-2,000 breeding pairs of black-capped petrels that nest in Hispaniola; it may not be able to fully recover without greater protections.
